It’s been awhile since I’ve seen a Zynga game, but here we are with Mountain Goat Mountain for Android. While I was jumping into the game, I kept thinking about all of the horror stories that surrounded the Zynga offices while the company was in its prime, and I was really not looking forward to playing this game, but I was surprised to find that this might be one of the best endless games I’ve played in a while.
You play as a goat that has to scale a mountain. Why isn’t important, but you’ll need to make sure you avoid obstacles like holes, boulders, crumbling cliffs, and hunger. That’s right, hunger. For some reason, this game has some kind of survival mechanic where you need to plot your course to involve plots of grass so that your goat can stay well fed.
So you will scale the mountain one tile at a time, and you have the ability to take your time while doing it. Well, at least in so far as you don’t starve to death while thinking about what to do next. There is also the occasional boulder tumbling down the mountain that will force you to move. But to be honest, you should pretty much always be moving anyway. Along the way you’ll be able to pick up coins to unlock new goats and unlocking new goats is the best part of the game.
The thing is, a new goat doesn’t only mean a new goat. It also means that your entire game’s aesthetic will change. Blocky Goat turns the entire mountain into a giant Lego mountain while Blizzard Goat turns the level into a snowy blizzard. This game easily has some of the best rewards of any game I’ve played on a mobile platform.
I can’t really recommend Mountain Goat Mountain enough. The game is kind of ridiculous in all of the best ways possible, and it’s a game that should definitely be on your radar.
