Review Magic Rush: Heroes

Brandon Girod
8.4Excellent
Combines RPG elements with tower defense, good graphics, solid controls
Has an energy system, still feels very much like many other rpgs
I’m always pretty critical of developers that like to put the same types of games out over and over again. And I don’t mean just ones they’ve done before. Flooding the market with “me too” games is just as bad. Magic Rush: Heroes for Android is a game that seems like another “me too” game at face value, but I changed my mind shortly after jumping in.
So this game takes action RPG elements and mixes them with tower defense mechanics. The two don’t cross over, but they do affect each other independently and in different ways. The game starts off with a character that looks suspiciously similar to Arthas, who is a character from World of Warcraft. He comes through, wreaks some havoc, steals your friends, and then bolts.
You gather up a few heroes and build a party to go after him. While the game starts off in a tower defense mode, you’ll spend the very beginning in a typical RPG setting. Characters will fight for themselves, but fighting does seem to be a bit more dynamic. Enemies just sort of come out from wherever and your skills require you to do various things in order to use them. Some of the character designs and skills seemed to be from a mixture of League of Legends and World of Warcraft, though they aren’t immediately noticeable aside from the Arthas lookalike.
The tower defense mechanics are also pretty run of the mill. You don’t have towers, instead your heroes can be placed wherever you’d like for them to be placed. They can be upgraded while here, and you can still use your special attacks, which work very similar to the way they work in the RPG parts of the game.
What I like the most about Magic Rush: Heroes is just the way that it melds two types of gameplay. Each offers something new to both genres, though they aren’t especially innovative. And there is plenty of loot and character building to do along the way.
