Review KungFu Age

Brandon Girod
Progression is linear, performance is fine
Bad graphics, progression is slow, combat is boring
Here comes another snoozefest. KungFu Age for Android is an action RPG game that is about as fun as the name might imply. The game is set in a time where kung fu legends are still being played out rather than written. And as fun of a time period as that might sound, this game does it little justice.
Like most mobile RPGs, you can guess every twist and turn. The story is completely forgettable, and is basically used as a loose web that ties levels together. All you really need to know is that you’re trying to put together a party of the strongest heroes around, and you’ll do that by fighting enemies, leveling up, and grabbing loot so you can grow your characters.
Combat is basically just something to look at. Your party, and the enemies, will auto-attack each other. The real auto-attack is locked until you hit level 12, but the only difference is that your heroes will automatically use their ultimates rather than you watching and waiting until they come up. In other words, there is very little strategy to be found in this RPG, which is strange.
You’ll spend the bulk of your time either waiting for the lame stamina system to recharge, or viewing stats. You’ll find items that you can equip your characters with that will allow them to be upgraded to more powerful versions, and you can unlock new heroes as well.
Now, there is nothing inherently wrong with this game except maybe the artwork. Everything in this game is hideous, but the mechanics are fine. They’re just boring. I’m not a fan of watching everything play out, I’d rather be a part of the action, so this gameplay doesn’t really appeal to my tastes.
Overall, KungFu Age doesn’t do anything wrong, but it doesn’t do anything innovative either. It’s like the kid that sits two rows behind you in class. The one you don’t really know exists because they blend in too well with everyone else and doesn’t stand out enough.
