Review Dubsmash

Jay Feldman
modest fun, simple interface, minimalist design
Weak functionality, internet connection required, is lagging
Dubsmash for Android is a simple app that's all about creating techno funk style video clips with ease. Browse an exhaustive collection of audio clips, record yourself doing something goofy or outright stupid, then post your masterpiece online and be the next viral sensation; maybe, but probably not.
Dubsmash displays in portrait to offer a no frills, vertically scrolling interface, populated with headline text and modest icons. This one wastes no time of the niceties of life and just gets right down to the meat and potatoes functionality of creating dub mixes. For those who aren't hip or savvy, like me, dub mixes are basically just an auto-tune sort of video clip with mildly interesting sound effects. People like to create all sorts of dubbed vids then post them online in hopes of impressing friends and garnering likes and votes. Why? Who knows; but it's a wildly popular time killer.
The app relies on a persistent internet connection to deliver the goods, and as such, is predictably laggy and slow when navigating from one page to the next. The app is basically just a collection of royalty free audio clips from an array of categories, like, Pitch Perfect, Cartoon, Funny, Love, Rap, Animals and Memorable Ads, just to name a few. Tapping any of the categories brings up an array of audio clips. Just tap on one that interests you and begin recording yourself via your front facing camera. Dubs are typically just a few seconds long, and videos rendered immediately after the audio clip has played. From there, you can save, post and share in the usual ways.
Dubsmash is decent for what little it does, but the videos aren't of very good quality. This one is mildly entertaining.
