Review Own Super Squad

Brandon Girod
8.6Excellent
Dynamic characters, fun gameplay, good graphics
Level design is too simple, combat isn’t complex
Throwing cute characters in my face isn’t the fastest way to my heart, but that’s exactly what Own Super Squad for Android tries to do, and while it may not work for me, it certainly does for thousands of other people.
So what is this game at its core? Well, that’s somewhat difficult to understand. The story starts off with a character who gets a new video game. After starting it up monsters from the game starts jumping out of the game, and another character jumps out and asks the kid to help him capture all of the monsters that are escaping. That’s your cue to jump in and start learning the basics.
There are five different characters you can control throughout the game, and each one has its own strengths and weaknesses. There are also two modes your character has: regular and then Own mode. Think about it like Power Rangers: regular mode is just you being Joe Shmoe. You can jump, block, dash, use melee, and switch to a ranged weapon if you have the ammo. But when you morph into the Own mode then you get huge stat increases and different types of attacks.
Monsters do have a tendency to gang up on your, but you can easily jump on top of them and run away to gather yourself. Monsters do get more difficult as you make your way through the game, but you level up so everything sort of balances itself out. My biggest issue with the gameplay is that it always seems to be “defeat x waves of monsters.” After a while that just gets to be a bit boring.
Even still, the game controls really well for having on-screen controls, and I never found myself getting frustrated while playing the game, which is a huge plus for a hack ‘n’ slash game like this.
I did have some fun with Own Super Squad, but I can’t say it’s really my cup of tea. I enjoy games of this genre, but the art style just wasn’t for me. It’s not bad by any means, I’m just not on-board with the whole chibi look. Many people will disagree with that, and if you’re one of them then I recommend this game because you’ll probably enjoy it.
