Review Rotare!

Brandon Girod
Great aesthetic contrast, simple controls
Bareboned gameplay, no unlocks or rewards
One-touch endless runners are great games to spend small amounts of time with, and Rotare! for Android certainly doesn’t try to do anything differently. It’s mechanically simple enough to actually be somewhat relieving to play, however.
Your character runs along a single, infinite plank. Occasionally there will be protrusions from the plank that could potentially block your path, but in the beginning it’s rare to happen. When it does, all you have to do is simply swipe to spin the plank so your character will continue running on an unobstructed path. Getting further into the game forces the protrusions to happen more frequently and ramp up the complexity so that you might only have one side of the plank to take rather than two or three.
I personally found the game to run at a pretty slow pace and since there aren’t any projectiles -- or anything else for that matter -- coming at you, the entire experience feels relatively laid back compared to more mechanically complicated endless runners. There is no physics system to learn and no other way to die other than running into one of the structures I mentioned before.
The good news is that I think this pacing will make a lot of players somewhat happy because they can play the game without constantly failing right off the bat. The game also looks really great and the contrast between the orange and blue color scheme was a good decision. On the other hand, the bad news is that the game is maybe too mechanically simple and there is no unlock system to reward players with new things. Instead, what you get in the beginning of the game is what you’ll always have.
So, Rotare! is a fun endless runner if you don’t want to get too frustrated, but it’s definitely not the right one if you’re looking for a bit of a challenge. It looks great, but it’s about as simple as it gets.
