Neat graphics, lots of levels, addictive game play, quality physics
Difficult to play without in-app purchases
Shakedown Racing for Android is a racing game with a very interesting gameplay concept. Instead of racing against other opponents, you'll race against the clock to reach certain checkpoints, hit down obstacles or complete other goals.
In this game, you will start with a limited pool of vehicles to drive in, and you'll be given access to a small selection of different missions. Each mission has it's own entry price, and you'll be able to earn back more by completing the mission. When I first took the game for a spin, I started with a very simple mission - drive to the finish line within 15 seconds. I had to jump over a ramp and dodge a gap to complete the mission. It seemed very easy, but as I played more missions, gameplay started to get more difficult.
Missions eventually become a lot more challenging to complete, and you'll have to start investing more practice into the game's controls to stand a chance at winning. In this game, you have three on-screen controls for accelerating, breaking/reversing and hand-breaking. You can also steer the car by tilting your device. Honestly, I think the controls could have been done a little better, and mastering them, particularly the steering, is very difficult.
Whilst completing missions, you can work towards unlocking new vehicles that have different stats. Although there are a lot of cars available to purchase with real cash or in-game currency, you can also unlock cars by completing certain objectives. I managed to bag myself a pretty sweet muscle car early on in the game, and I found it to be a lot faster than the starting car. Another great thing about this game are the graphics. The developers have opted for 3D cartoon style graphics and a similar cartoon style interface.
Shakedown Racing is definitely quite a lot of fun, although the controls can be a little difficult to get used to. The game also has a lot of in-app purchases that can make it difficult to play without paying at times.
