Review Memrise: Learn a new language

Brandon Girod
9.0Excellent
Helps aid your memory efficiently, unique concept, pleasing visual design
Only helps you memorize vocab and phrases, gets really repetitive by nature
Memrise for Android is an app that classifies itself as a memory aid. I believe that’s kind of an odd claim to make because it doesn’t just help you memorize what you would expect -- like language -- instead it helps you memorize an incredibly broad range of topics. But how exactly does it do this?
Well, the simple answer is with language.
After you set up an account through Facebook or Google+ you’re prompted to choose what you want to memorize. It defaults to your typical languages but you can go further than that and choose some pretty broad or specific topics.
Now, with learning a language I totally expected to just see absolutely nothing other than vocabulary words, and I was pretty much right. When I switched to learning Java I didn’t really know what to expect, but what I got was basically another vocabulary test. So, in other words, if you’re looking for it to explain concepts to you so that you can learn and memorize them then this doesn’t exactly do that.
It does do a pretty good job at using reinforcement to help you memorize things, though. You’ll be asked several times to match words or phrases and type them out. Every time you do you’ll get a new part to a flower. If you haven’t matched the word in a while then the flower will deteriorate and you’ll have to build it back up again.
Overall Memrise does pretty much what it says it does but don’t expect it to do anymore than that. If you want to learn a new language or skill then this isn’t the way to go, but if you need help memorizing parts of something you’re learning then I highly recommend giving this a shot.
