A glorified alarm clock

somewhat of a lark, weak functionality, not powerful enough
Smart Sleep Manager for Android aims to help you sleep better. Just open this app at bedtime, select a lulling soundscape to help you drift off, and the app will purportedly track your sleep patterns and body movements to wake you in the most unobtrusive manner possible. Sounds great, assuming it works.
Smart Sleep Manager has some lofty goals for a modest sleep app. Personally, I'm highly suspect of apps that claim to use your accelerometer to monitor your sleep habits. My personal doctor happens to be a sleep specialist, and he outright laughed at this app, and I tend to agree with his cynicism. For starters, I sleep on a latex mattress, and it's so effective at absorbing body movement, that it renders this app completely useless. Truth be told, just monitoring shock waves from someone rustling about in bed is hardly an effective method of monitoring sleep, and if you believe this app is even remotely effective, then I've got some Snake Oil to sell you, cheap. There's virtually no science behind this shill sleeping app, other than the power of placebo. And don't even get me started on the health implications of sleeping with your head a few inches away from a radioactive cell phone antenna.
The app functions well enough and does offer some interesting visual feedback that larks everyone into believing it actually does something. There's 30 lulling sounds to use at bedtime, which are indeed effective at helping you drift off to sleep. And yes, there's a wholly functional alarm clock, which is ultimately what this app is all about. And no, this app has no clue when you're in REM sleep; make no mistake about that. REM sleep is all about eye movement, not body movement, so unless you're placing your phone atop your eyelids, this app ain't reading jack.
Smart Sleep Manager is shockingly popular for what little it offers. Yes, there are bona fide sleep apps out there which actually have something tangible to offer, but this app ain't one of them.
