Review Heroes of War: Orcs vs Knights

Brandon Girod
8.0Excellent
Incredibly high resolution graphics and animations, competent gameplay and performance
Adheres too closely to a stale gameplay formula, is too afraid to take any real risks with the mechanics, suffers from huge timers right off the bat, leaving the player left with nothing to do too often
As people, we generally want an abundance of good things, but the keys is moderation because there can definitely be too much of a good thing. Heroes of War: Orcs vs Knights for Android is the prime example of what happens when we let good things be taken too far.
If it had been released a few years ago, I might be singing a different tune. But here we are, three years after Clash of Clans was released, and we have a game that is nothing more than a blatant rip off of the game. A good one, but a knock-off nonetheless.
The graphics are really, really good, and the mechanics are just as sound as you’d expect, but it’s literally the exact same game you’ve probably been playing for years at this point.
You start by going through a needless tutorial which does nothing more than have you upgrade your base one building at a time. Then you’re let into the world to play until your heart’s content. Except that the game is totally loaded down with timers, just like its predecessor. It’s hard to even look forward to games like these because you know every action you take is going to be met with a huge timer, and you won’t see the fruits of your labor for quite some time.
I don’t really have anything super positive to say about Heroes of War: Orcs vs Knights other than just how great the visuals are. The gameplay is the same stale formula we’ve been playing for years, and there is absolutely nothing that sets it apart from any of the other thousand base building, pseudo-RTS games currently in the market. So unless you’re dying to spend hours and hours waiting around for nothing, you can probably skip by this one.
