Review Bubble Shooter

Brandon Girod
Revives an old game genre, has great performance
Shooting mechanics are very floaty, the difficulty curve is huge
I grew up playing bubble shooters on old flash game sites at school with friends. Yabs: The Bubble Shooter for Android definitely isn’t one of those games. It’s an evolution of those old soap games that is completely relentless in its pursuit to shut you down.
If you’ve ever played any of the older bubble shooters then you’ll recognize the concept easily enough, but this game does one thing different and it completely shifts the gameplay. Rather than having the bubbles remain static like stones, they move. So let’s say you clear a big row of red bubbles but there is a green straggler attached to one of the corners. That green bubble will actually fall towards you, and if you can’t take care of it before it reaches you then you’ll fail that mission.
It also means that the big group of bubbles is always moving, rotating, and shifting. Having the bubbles move like bubbles when you launch them doesn’t help either. So instead of the precise shooting mechanics you’re used to, everything feels loose and floaty. This opens up a lot of depth to the gameplay, but also leads to some frustrating moments as well because it seems like it’s impossible to get the bubble exactly where you want it to go.
Yabs: The Bubble Shooter is difficult but fun. Some players will undoubtedly get frustrated by how the bubbles move, and that’s to be expected. The game exists to be difficult and challenging. Its biggest downfall is the lack of color, though. The overall atmosphere of the game is just kind of dreary despite it being a game about bubbles.
