Review The Numbers Machine

Tariq Abdulla
Unusual game design, quality graphics, every level brings something new, unusual game play
Too simple tasks
The Numbers Machine for Android is one of those games that aims to make simple arithmetic fun, and it actually does a pretty good job of it. It’s hosted by a victorian inventor gentlemen with a slightly manic laugh (Mwah-hah-hah-ha). His invention is a sort of counting machine that challenges you to put the right numbered balls in slots to get the result shown. As you keep playing you get silver and gold colored balls that are worth more points.
Difficulty ranks up by adding more numbers that you need to mentally add together. So at the start, you have e.g. a 7, and you need 9, so you put the 2 in the slot. Later you have a 6 and a 3 and you need 14, so you put a 5 in. And so on. It’s not terribly difficult, but by training to do it quickly you will keep your mental arithmetic on its toes. I think it would be a great game for kids, as the presentation makes it feel quite fun. They’ll soon be sharpening their sums without even realising it.
I’m kind of rusty in terms of mental math, and I felt like I was seeding up as I into the swing of it. It’s probably quite a good way to embed this sort thing into your subconscious. I reckon this would be more stimulating than matching games. The fact that you only need to tap the right number, and the fluid animation, make it feel like a proper game, and not just maths problems in disguise.

Offers a math game covered in great presentation, features head-to-head multiplayer
The equations are too easy, the gameplay itself, what little is there, is pretty shallow
Raise your hand if you like math. Anyone with their hand up is lying. People that use math usually use it as a means to an end, although I guess there has to be someone out there who really does enjoy it. The Number Machine for Android is a game that tries to strengthen your basic math skills by playing a game.
The game’s presentation is a little bit on the odd side. When you first take a look at it, you’d almost think it was a puzzle game, but it’s not really that all. You have an equation you’re trying to fill out, and the board is really nothing more than a bank of numbers for you to choose from.
Most of the equations start off simple enough. You’ll be given a relatively small number and an answer. You want to fill in the blank. The first number always starts off in numerical order, so the first stage will have you adding 1 to a bunch of numbers to find the answer. Then it will progress to two and then three, etc..
The game also has multiplayer which puts you in a basic race against another player. This mode is a little bit different because you’ll have an answer, and you are trying to create an equation to get that answer from your bank of numbers.
The Numbers Machine sets out what it hopes to accomplish with its presentation because the math aspect is cleverly hidden when you first boot up the game. Unfortunately, there really isn’t much going on in the gameplay department that makes the game, well, fun. It’s more like a calculator than anything else.
