Review Flockers

Brandon Girod
Beautiful visuals, seamless performance, dark and funny in-game humor
Clunky controls, suffers from every input pausing the game
When you think about it, Worms are pretty boring. They crawl around helplessly and dig through dirt all day. The developers of Worms recognized this and decided their next game would feature sheep because sheep are obviously hot this year. Que Flockers, a game where you lead your flock of sheep to safety. Or death.
The first few levels seem innocent enough. There are a few saws here and there, but ultimately, the path to safety is pretty much guaranteed. But you soon realized your flock of sheep are smack dab in the middle of some evil sheep executioner’s wet dream.
You don’t directly control any of the sheep, but you can manipulate them. The first thing you normally want to do is scope out the level. There are extra objectives you can pick up along the way, and sometimes you’ll need to split your flock up in order to complete them. Sheep are stupid, so they walk in straight lines. As you progress through the game you’ll have access to different abilities that make your sheep do things like jump, which is vital to their survival.
The game looks really great, I love the visuals, and the performance is seamless. One of my complaints lies within the controls. When you’re applying the powers you can drag your finger across to open up a select box, similar to an RTS game, in order to apply the effect to multiple sheep. What typically happens is the game doesn’t register the input, so you just swipe the camera across the level. You can pause the game quickly enough, but every input also pauses the gameplay for a split second, which is annoying when you’re just trying to pan the camera because it gives the game a stutter effect.
Flockers is a really fun game despite its clunky use of the pause button and multi-select. The level design is good, and the gameplay mechanics are interesting and spread across the game to keep things interesting.
