Creative gameplay, addictive
Why the golfing theme?
Fairway Solitaire Blast for Android is an alternative take on solitaire. In the game, you order cards either up or down, and then you also have the ability to use certain powerups that impact the cards on the level. Your goal in the game is to get rid of all the cards on the table. It's a little different than solitaire, but the mechanics of putting cards in order remain the same.
While I'm not the biggest fan of solitaire, I actually found Fairway to be a fun and enjoyable experience. I like how the levels felt a little more predetermined, and the difficulty felt like the game flowed much more evenly than solitaire does, with just the basic stack of cards. In solitaire, you find yourself with unlucky cards and no room for maneuvering. In this game, that is rarely the case. You have cards to fall back onto and draw from, but you also have the powerups which can help you in very tricky moments. There's also strategy and timing, incorporated by deciding when to use these powerups.
There are also a variety of different powerups. These swipe to get rid of cards horizontally, vertically, or just in a scattered sort of direction.
The theme of the game doesn't really match cards in some ways. The game tries to incorporate a golf like system for powerups and the level map experience, but I'm not quite sure why. Sometimes it just feels like it was a random stylistic choice that the developers made. But I am a fan of the graphics and of the audio feedback that happens when you flip cards, use powerups, and complete levels. The app has a lot of freemium sort of charisma, but I enjoyed how the app played because there wasn't that rehashed gameplay, or general cheap feel that so many games have.
Fairway Solitaire Blast is an innovative take on solitaire, and one that I might actually find more fun to play; if not easier, than the original game itself. Needless to say, Fairway is a great mobile experience that fans of the solitaire might find quite interesting indeed.
