Review Phases

Brandon Girod
8.4Excellent
Beautiful visuals, clever level design
Controls feel loose at times, relatively short game with only 40 levels
Phases for Android feels like a game that I’ve played before, but I can’t really seem to place it anywhere in my mind. The game, while taking a very minimalistic approach, is dripping with style and great design. You play as a ball that perpetually bounces. You’re trying to make it.. somewhere; and while you’re going to where you want to be, you’ll have to avoid hitting the black objects along the way.
The game controls really well. You tap on the right side of the screen to move right, and the left side to move left. The ball bounces by itself, so you really don’t have to worry about that aspect, but timing the jumps is quite difficult.
As you progress through the levels you’ll find yourself going through many different phases which, thankfully, mark checkpoints you can start from when you inevitably die.
It seems that just about every phase has its own little theme in level design going on, and each of them will push you to your limits in different ways. Although the controls are limited, it forces you to master them along with the timing of the ball’s bounce in order to navigate each phase without dying.
Phases has a really great design language that made me love every bit of progressing through each phase. The controls were spot on, but sometimes I felt that they could be floaty. There were often times I felt that a jump was overcompensated by the game. Fortunately, these spots were few and far between, and I had a lot of fun playing the game otherwise.
