Review The Oregon Trail: Settler

Jay Feldman
Perfect soundtrack, quality graphics, interesting game play
Uses a lot of system resources, animation is a bit laggy, difficult to play without in-app purchases
The Oregon Trail: Settler for Android takes you on an all American history lesson, back to the days of the early settlers. It's up to you to work the land, build a new community and survive in the wild, wild west.
The Oregon Trail: Settler takes a familiar game genre and places it in a completely unique and interesting environment. This is like a little history lesson that can be as entertaining as it is fun and educational. I really loved the score because it instantly took me back to what that era must have been like. And true to any great American story, this game is actually about hard work, earning and making an honest living. Build water towers, plant seeds, till the soil, sell your produce and even read mail delivered by Pony Express; you name it, this game has all the colloquialisms and bases covered.
The graphics are actually quite good; very colorful and inviting. The animation renders well and is nice to look at. And the zoom controls are excellent; you can go wide to see the open prairies you're developing, or go in nice and close and see all the details. I loved all the nature sounds too, and the twangy soundtrack. There's plenty of characters to interact with and it's fun to see your community slowly grow and thrive. It's all very satisfying.
The Oregon Trail: Settler takes what has easily become a tired game format and breathed new life into it with an interesting premise and good visuals. And best of all, it appears the IAPs don't get in the way of solid play. You can pay for your upgrades or earn them the old fashioned way - through solid dedication and hard work. Now if you'll excuse me, I hear my Papi callin' and there's work to be done. Yee-ha!
