Great retro music and graphics, fun gameplay, challenging
No significant shortcomings
KatataK for Android is a retro shoot-em-up type game. In many ways it’s a goofy game, but don't be mistaken, it’s not easy. In fact, depending on how you look at the game, it could be considered remarkably dark. Cats have taken over the world and somehow gained control of advanced technology that lets them take over society and claw/bite us to death. Will they eat us? Or simply play with us till every ounce of blood is drained from our bodies?
The theme of the game isn’t taken that seriously, and mostly exists to give the game some sort of different feel, and comical value. For that reason, I really like the setting as it doesn’t take itself seriously, or try to be something it clearly isn’t. A lot of mobile fantasy or science fiction games make that mistake. At its core, Katata is over-the-top cheesy, and well, sometimes badass.
The main character is the person you control. He is a ruggedly handsome man who plays video games one second, and then busts out grenades and weapons the next to slay kitties. Could this game be making fun of gamers? I think so.
The gameplay in the game is very fun, challenging, and addictive. You are slowly introduced to new guns and new allies that keep things feeling fresh, and while a lot of cats look the same and they just keep coming at you, they remain fun to kill because of their funny animations; and because the overall idea is just funny. The guns also have cool differences like the shotgun having a wide arc. Each gun is different, and has to be played differently. For example: the UZI, who goes through ammo super quick. Reloading in this game has a whole mechanic, in and of itself; and one that encourages timed-strategy if you want to stay alive.
Katatak has a weird name, but don’t let that deter you. There is a goofy feel about the game, with a simple arcade atmosphere (both musically, graphically, and gameplay-wise), that is highly appealing.
