Review InstaSize

Kevin Vadala
Great utility
Clunky UI, video ads
Instasize for Android is an application that goes very well with Instagram. Inside the app you can make an assortment of collages, but the main draw is that you can select a photo inside the app, and upload it to instagram, without having to crop it. This works because the app places a border around pictures to trick Instagram into thinking it's a square shape. It’s a clever solution that takes a little work on your part, but gets the job done.
Instasize is a simple app, and at times it feels too simple. For example, if you want to “Instasize” a photo, it won’t let you tap "instasize". Instead, the app just Instasizes something when you output the picture. This could be confusing for some who can’t figure out how to Instasize.
When you aren’t Instasizing, you will probably be messing around with some of the collages. These collages look good and have various color borders which is cool, but getting pictures into the collages is a laggy affair. The application doesn’t have good touch registration, so sometimes it will make you tap menus or icons that simply don’t work. There’s also a persistent ad on the bottom, that when seen side by side with some of the errors, make the app feel cheap. The interface within the app is also extremely bland with mostly white backgrounds and black text.
Instasize is a good app, and it accomplishes what it says it will. It just doesn’t look good doing it, and there are a lot of ads that can get in the way of “Instasizing” quickly. When I tried to instasize my first picture, I had to watch a 30 second ad that I couldn’t quit out of. That is horrible! I’d rather have a cropped photo than watch it!
