Graphics feel unfair, shallow experience, no tutorials
Pickup Sticks Mikado for Android is a game that bases itself on the pickup sticks game. In the game, you are supposed to tap on sticks in the right order to rack up points. This sounds simple in theory, but in reality, it is quite hard to tell which sticks lay on top of each other, beside each other, or around each other.
When I first started the application up I didn't even know how to play the game, because I was not familiar with this type of game. There is no tutorial to tell you how to play.
I had to look at the Google Play Store, and once I did that, I was able to understand that you pick the sticks that are on top of each other before you pick the sticks that are below other sticks. This is the main component of the game, and it can prove tricky playing this game in a digital way without having much graphical detail that provides depth, complicated texture, and shadow. It almost feels like the graphics are made to be make the gameplay inherently difficult.
There are a couple of modes in the game like arcade and a multiplayer component, but these additional modes don't really add anything to the already simple gameplay. However, I can see the multiplayer component being more fun than just playing by yourself. Debating whether a stick is on top or underneath with another player, sounds a lot more fun than doing so by yourself.
While I wasn't really in love with a game when I first tried it, I was only less impressed with the game once the aggressive ad system started to take place. In this case, and in many others, I almost feel like developers pick a very very simple game that does not take long to make, in order to generate ad revenue. It's never a good thing when a game feels like this.
Pick up sticks Mikado is a simple game that relies on you picking up sticks in the right order. You pick up sticks to get high scores and that's really it. If this sounds like fun, do try the game out.
