Snappy controls, vibrant colors, cool upgrades
FPS can stutter, loading screen can misbehave
Heli Hell for Android is a bright and colorful game that really packs on the action vibes. It uses the phrase "Get to da Choppa!" - which is from Arnold's Predator. You aren't really picking up any people in the game, but I could see why they stuck that line on the game's screen. It's very reminiscent of a 80's action movie.
Once the game starts up, you are introduced to the controls and soon you are flying and shooting through general mayhem. For some reason mine had a stutter. It was stuck on the loading screen for a bit with no implication that the game was working. At first, the game seemed choppy but it eventually cleared up. I attribute this to the numerous particle effects that dance around the screen.
The controls were very easy to grasp, as you basically control the helicopter in any which way directly with your finger. These controls work good for a game like this, because you can dodge missiles and projectiles that much quicker (if you aren't careful the speed of the controls can also be your downfall).
The missiles and fire that come at your helicopter light up the screen with bright pinks glows, and the ships and various airplanes attacking you blow up in fiery explosions. The effects and sounds really add to the action of the game, and make shooting fun and satisfying.
Dodging laser fire can also be interesting in this game. My favorite things to dodge were the things that felt most fair. Some lasers have a warning period, and dodging them at the last second feels much more gratifying than accidentally running into a spare laser - that very often flies at you from an angle that is hard to avoid.
Luckily, you are given armor on your helicopter and you can divert a lot of damage. If you stack up a lot of coins, you can also revive yourself. This makes taking damage feel more realistic, and I couldn't help but feel that the helicopter is more durable to compensate for those hard to avoid shots.
Heli Hell is a fine game for those craving action and shooting. It's got a clear art style and enough punch to satisfy any arcade fan, and also some depth to upgrading and buying new helicopters to keep the action going.
