Intuitive interface, stylish design
Expensive flights, is lagging
Hipmunk Hotels & Flights for Android is a feature rich travel app. Book flights and hotels with ease.
Hipmunk Hotels & Flights is a very cute travel app; or rather, they have a very cute little mascot. I guess he's their answer to the Travelocity gnome, only little Hipmunk is actually cute. To begin, login with Facebook, Google+ or create an account with your email, which allows you to save searches, set price alerts and manage your bookings. To book a flight or hotel, just enter your search query and start planning that dream vacation.
The interface is a tad small, with tiny little fonts that might be problematic on a smaller screen. The app displays well in portrait or landscape modes. For flights, just input your departure and destination cities to generate a list of flights. Results are displayed on a timeline so you can easily see each day's results. They also list which amenities are available, like meals or on board WiFi. Just select flights that interest you to get more details or launch a booking via external browser. The prices looked a little steep and did not seem to include budget airlines like Southwest. However, every major carrier was there.
The hotel side of things works much in the same manner; just input your destination city or zip code to display results. A list of hotels is on the left and a GPS map is on the right. Scroll through the results to find hotels that interest you; click on any hotel for additional details, amenities and pictures too. Everything looked great and prices seemed comparable with other apps and direct bookings.
The app functions relatively quickly but I did experience hangs and buffering issues; particularly with the maps. It slowed things down, but the app is still usable.
Hipmunk Hotels & Flights is a nice travel app overall but I think there's room for speed and display improvements. It doesn't function as nicely as some others I've tried and the flights seemed to be just as pricey as anywhere else, with no real deals to be had. However, the app should help make travel research convenient.
