Review Swarm

Jay Feldman
7.6Good
Modern design, easy to navigate
Nothing innovative, occasional gangs
Swarm for Android is yet another app that offers users endless ways to over share their personal lives via social media. It functions well enough but doesn't really offer anything new or innovative over the countless other apps in this genre.
Swarm is a social media app. Login with Facebook or Twitter, or create a profile direct with Swarm. There’s really nowhere to go with this app without an account, so be prepared to set one up or grant access to your other social media faves right away. The process is fast and easy, though it may also mean you’re immediately on Swarm’s email list, and none of us need more spam.
The app functions nicely. I like the clean design and color scheme. You can check-in and share your location and activities with friends, and easily post status updates. I don’t participate in social media, so I have no understanding of this need to constantly tell others your whereabouts and doings. But for those that enjoy this compulsion, Swarm does a nice job of it all. I think this would be great for socially active people who have lots of friends. And it all seemed to work nicely for me, with only minor hangs here and there.
The only thing I question with Swarm is, what’s unique about it? Why should users join this app as opposed to just doing these status updates via Facebook directly? Or just using Hangouts, which is standard on any Android phone. Perhaps there are advantages with this app that weren't immediately apparent to me. I just didn't see anything innovative that makes this one stand apart from all the rest.
Swarm is a solid entry in the social media app genre. I’m just not clear what makes it better than what is already out there. It all felt kind of bland. However it was nicely done, as far as apps like this go.
