Review Zombies, Run!

Jay Feldman
Innovative, minimalist design
Costly, crashes, glitches, uses a lot of system resources
Zombies, Run! For Android plants users straight inside the action. It’s almost an homage to Orson Welles’ infamously famous “War Of The Worlds” radio broadcast, only this time with zombies, and you’re living out the imaginary game in real life.
I give Zombies, Run! a lot of credit for innovation. I know of no other app that plunges you directly into an imaginary game scenario and requires you to actually get off your butt and to play. The game sets up the scenario that zombies are actually loose in the streets of your city, and it’s your job to go out there, complete tasks and physically engage in playing the game while listening along. This is part scavenger hunt part departure from reality. I almost wonder if some borderline people could get lost in this game and start to believe it as real.
The interface is simple and clean, however it does not display properly if you have large fonts activated. I’m not a fan of tiny, minuscule text, so I have my system text set to large, and much of it gets cut off in the menus of this game. It’s all nicely laid out with a lot of nuance to it. However, I did experience repeated Force Close issues. I admire the games ambition and story telling value, but I found it all to be a little belabored and lumbering.
Zombies, Run! Is the type of game that needs you to commit whole heartedly to the world it has created. This isn't something you’re going to play here and there, then forget about. This is the kind of game that will take over your life and cost you some decent coin to keep playing. Think of it as an interactive series of novels, and continuing through each chapter of the story requires another purchase.
Zombies, Run! Definitely has promise. However, it is also bogged down with technical glitches. And the ongoing cost to play just isn't my thing. Some people may really love it though. It has the potential to be a cult hit, and clearly has aspirations of being a hit movie or series. If this is your genre, then you’ll be beside yourself with glee over this game. It’s all very ambitious and immersive, but ultimately, I see it as being for a very limited audience.
