Review Alto's Odyssey

Brandon Girod
Excellent mix of quality sound design and animation, does free-to-play right
No core gameplay changes
The first time I jumped into Alto’s Odyssey for Android, I had one word: breathtaking. This is a follow-up game to the original Alto’s Odyssey, and if you’re wondering how the developers could build upon a near-perfect game, well, they somehow pulled it off. Odyssey embraces everything that made Adventure great and expanded on it in various ways.
If you were a huge fan of Alto’s Adventure then chances are, you’ll really like this game, too. There aren’t a ton of differences in terms of gameplay, so you’ll feel right at home. If this is your first foray into the the game then you’re in for a treat. What the Alto’s series does well is experience. The general formula of the game is the same as many free-to-play endless runners but this game has finesse, polish and atmosphere that few can compare.
The gameplay is based on a few characters that you play as, as you explore the world in an objective-based gaming experience or Zen Mode, which lets you play without consequence. Objectives are based on traditional endless runner themes, like performing stunts or jumps a certain number of times.
The game itself is absolutely gorgeous. Where the first game focused pretty heavily on a single environment, Odyssey is a good mix of beautiful colors and heavy atmosphere. The music is emotional and fits in perfectly with the themes and the character animations are nothing but lively.
Overall, Alto’s Odyssey has a lot to offer both newcomers to the franchise and seasoned vets. The game sacrifices nothing in terms of quality but changes things up enough to offer experienced players something to look forward to.
