Review The Room: Old Sins

9.7Excellent
Brings the game back to its roots, breathtaking visuals, mind boggling puzzles
It's tough
If you’ve been playing games on a cell phone for any number of years, you’ve likely ran into games from The Room series. If you’re a fan of the series, you probably remember the dramatic shift the third game took compared to its predecessors. Well, good news. The Room Old Sins for Android puts you back in a room with a small but simultaneously huge puzzle to solve.
You’ll start off with a quick tutorial, which also gives the game a chance to hit you with a bit of its creepy vibe. You can swipe to look around, double tap to focus on objects, single tap to pick some up and pinch to zoom out. You’ll also use different gestures to interact with puzzles. And that’s the meat of the game - puzzles. The Room is like the puzzle genre’s version of a Metroidvania game. You’ll unlock some puzzles that will inform other puzzles. You’ll solve one here, one there and eventually work your way toward a bigger goal.
Old Sins places a slightly bigger emphasis on using objects to solve puzzles as you make your way through a twisted doll house in your attic. You’ll use a special lens that lets you see things your naked eye would otherwise obscure. The rest of the game plays out like most games in the series, however. And just like the previous entries, you can pretty much jump into this one blind and enjoy it.
The Room Old Sins brings the series back to its roots by putting you in a room with a puzzle. The graphics paint the game in a beautiful light and the creepy atmosphere breathes life into it. If you’re a fan of puzzle games, this is one to get, even with its steep price tag.
