Review Shikaku Heat

Brandon Girod
8.0Excellent
Great design, extremely fun gameplay mechanics
Tutorial is too long, difficulty stagnates
To be honest, I’ve never heard of Shikaku before, but it’s really a thing. And as far as I can tell, Shikaku Heat for Android is a mobile puzzle game that seems to get it all right. It’s like one of those matching games where you’re trying to quickly do math problems in your head but it’s much easier than that. Instead, you’re just filling in space based on numbers and shapes.
So, there are a few different ways to play Shikaku. This one combines numbers and shapes that you will decipher in order to fill up a grid of squares. The number of squares in each grid varies. Numbers indicate how many squares need to be filled by that particular color. The shapes indicate what shape you need to draw, and the shapes is where things get really interesting. Here you’re not limited to a number of grids you’re required to fill, instead, you’ll need to make that decision based on the numbers. However, where you fill in your numbers depends on what shape you need to make. Now you probably see where things get difficult.
Fortunately, the game is incredibly polished. I loved the minimal look of it. The art is bright and colorful. It definitely looks like a modern game. The gameplay is relaxing, too. Puzzles aren’t frustratingly difficult, instead you just need to take time to plot your moves ahead of time.
Shikaku Heat is a great example of a mobile puzzle game done right. The art style is simple enough to be displayed easily on most mobile devices. The puzzles are short and can be played in a queue, killing time or on the can.
