Review Super Mario Run

Brandon Girod
Spectacular graphics, polished control and animations
There are only 24 levels, game is incredibly pricey for little value
Back when Nintendo originally said the company would be moving its many popular IPs to the mobile platform, many people began speculating how they could essentially set the world on fire with innovation. But I knew better. Super Mario Run for Android is a totally competent - and dare I say good! - runner. But it’s just that - another runner.
Runners now come in various shapes and sizes. This is a sidescrolling runner that tasks you with not only completing levels, but also collection gold and pink coins. The game is short with only 24 levels in it, but the difficulty tacked on with the pink coins is a way for Nintendo to encourage players to play through the content multiple times. That sounds fine until you run into one small problem - the game is $10 and there are only 24 levels. That means you could conceivably spend $10 for about an hour’s worth of gameplay and walk away with almost nothing to show for it.
Now before I beat the game down too much, this is a game I could easily see myself wanting more of. The controls are top notch and the entire game just screams high production value. But again, there are only 24 levels. Levels are varied and interesting. Sometimes there are water levels and sometimes it seems like you’re in the middle of a volcano. But there are only 24 levels.
When you beat the game, you can then go on and replay those same 24 levels with different characters. But unless you’re just a die hard Mario fan, you’re still playing through the same content again. By the way, did I mention there are only 24 levels?
Super Mario Run honestly isn’t a great example of Nintendo stepping into the world of mobile gaming. My worst fears were realized when I saw that Nintendo would just be taking popular mobile gaming genres and throwing skins of popular Nintendo IPs over them. Remember that Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition game? It was just a precursor of what was to come.
