Review Tappymon - Ultimate Edition

Brandon Girod
7.0Good
Colorful graphics, easy to play
Poor pacing, awful stamina system, entirely luck based
Imagine if Pokemon was created in 2016 instead of 1996. What kind of game mechanics do you think would exist within the game? Would it still be a traditional turn-based RPG? I personally think it might actually be something very similar to Tappymon for Android - an RPG tapper that gets more wrong than right. In other words, I’m glad we got Pokemon in ‘96.
Tappymon isn’t really a tapping game in the most traditional sense. Rather than basing the game’s entire existence around the mechanic, it simply incorporates it by adding it in bits and pieces. The game begins with a terrible tutorial that you end up absent-mindedly tapping through, only to realize you don’t really know what you were doing the entire time when you get out. That’s okay, though, the gameplay is simple.
You get a team of three Tappymon and must tap your way through boring and repetitive levels. Playing through a level takes up stamina, of which you have precious little. Beating levels will net you rewards like gold and food. Food is used to level up your Tappymon, and gold is used to purchase artifacts and elements. Artifacts are items that will boost your stats while elements will evolve your Tappymon. Unfortunately, the entire process is painfully slow and earning elements to evolve your Tappymon is luck-based which drains all the fun right out of it.
Tappymon is a dreadful tapper that I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. The mechanics are boring, the pacing is awful and even the name is based on a pre-existing IP. There is nothing original about this game. Do yourself a favor and download Tap Titans instead.
