Omnicrons introduce fun gameplay mechanics, good graphics
Performance stutters, doesn't innovate well, includes random loot gambling system
Mobile games have a pretty bad wrap when it comes to releasing too many similar games in the same genre. One of the biggest culprits is the runner genre and Ben 10: Up to Speed for Android is another game that slaps simple skin on a tired template.
If you’re not familiar with Ben 10, it’s a popular cartoon show featured on Cartoon Network. It depicts a 10-year-old boy who gets a cool watch that allows him to turn into 10 different aliens with unique abilities. Keeping with that same trend, the mobile runner features Ben running through levels collecting coins while dispatching enemies by turning into different Omnicrons.
Overall, the gameplay is pretty generic. You have three lanes to run in and you’ll swipe left or right to switch lanes. To attack enemies you’ll swipe down and you’ll swipe up to jump over obstacles. The game begins to come a little into its own when you factor in how the Omnicrons work. Changing into the Omnicrons requires you to manage them as resource. You’ll need to transform into an Omnicron in order to take care of grouped up enemies and to take certain paths. Learning which Omnicron will allow you to traverse certain types of terrain is pretty crucial here.
Unfortunately, even with the inclusion of the Omnicrons, Ben 10: Up to Speed just doesn’t do enough interesting things to warrant its $3 price tag - especially when you consider the fact that a random loot gambling system still exists in the game.
