Interesting character designs, short tutorial
Boring gameplay, not enough stats to upgrade
Clickers is one of the best genres for the mobile platform because games tend to be so intuitive to use. Simply tap the screen and things happen. Better yet, the majority of games play themselves while idle in your pocket. Tap Evolution for Android is yet another clicker game, but one that challenges you to evolve a life form from its single-cell structure to a world dominating race of half men-half beasts.
When I first booted up the game I didn’t really understand what I was going to be doing long term (guess I should have looked at the photos!) The beginning is admittedly pretty boring. You’ll tap the screen a set number of times to evolve your organism, but once you hit a certain point, you’ll get the choice to determine a new path of evolution. Once decided, the game takes a different turn.
After evolution happens you’ll be taken to a world map where you are then tasked with global domination. You’ll start off with one territory and be able to attack other territories to take over. Taking over new territories happens in two stages: an incredibly long minion battle and then a boss battle. The minion battle is probably the most annoying thing about the game. For instance, I’m currently right in the middle of a battle that wants me to click the screen over 35,000 times while I watch minions fight each other. The boss battle is simply a stat check. If you’re not strong enough then you can go back to your character screen and build stats by tapping the screen.
I wasn’t sure if I was going to love Tap Evolution or hate it, but it turns out I didn’t really feel either way about it. The game is okay, but I wouldn’t really call it fun. The lack of upgrade variation really puts a damper on things and the minion battle is just annoying.
