Review Smurfs Epic Run
A seriously good runner
Author: Brandon Girod
Date: 01 Jul 2017, tested on HTC One M8
Good graphics, solid performance, great controls, fun levels
Pricey DLC, loading times are too long
I’m almost a little embarrassed to say, but Smurfs Epic Run for Android is maybe one of the better - if not one of the best - runners that I’ve played. Maybe that’s because I’ve been out of the game a bit, but this one is truly a good runner whether you’re a fan of the Smurfs or not.
Even as a child, I was never a big fan of the Smurfs. Something about little blue gnomey things running around just never really sat right with me. I still don’t truly appreciate the subject matter, but I think this game gets it right. First, it’s broken down into levels, similar to how the upcoming Mario Run game is going to be. This means there is a sense of progression. Things get progressively harder, giving you time to actually learn the game at your own pace rather than the game’s. Did you find a level too difficult? You can just go back and replay it. Simple.
Each level has its own objectives to complete, reaching the end of each level is only part of the challenge. Along the way you’ll want to free Smurfs that have been captured and collect coins. If you’re lucky, you’ll have the opportunity to free a legendary Smurf. Legendaries Smurfs have extra abilities, like the ability to glide, which you’ll need to complete some levels. And unlocking Smurfs and other content cost coins, which you’ll collect throughout the game.
The graphics are really on point. I was surprised to see Ubisoft’s name stamped as the developer, but given their performance with AAA titles on consoles, the fact that this game is good isn’t too much of a surprise.
Smurfs Epic Run is a great runner no matter who you are. If you can get over having to play as Smurfs, you’ll see what I mean.
