Great throwback tunes, fantastic animation
Doesn't push the envelope
Hearing the name PAC-MAN certainly won’t fill you with nostalgia for a legendary bubble shooter, but that’s what Bandai Namco has turned the latest game iteration into in PAC-MAN Pop for Android. So if you’re expecting to dodge ghosts in an epic game of cat and mouse then you’ll need to look elsewhere.
Unsurprisingly, this game is just like every other bubble shooter, which is pretty disappointing. Don’t get me wrong, the game looks absolutely great. Imagine all the cutesy themes and polish you’d get from your typical match-three game and apply them here. It’s the same story. Animations look amazing, the music somewhat reminiscent of past PAC-MAN music and the artwork is good.
If you’re a fan of bubble shooters then you’ll feel right at home. You’ll drag your finger to aim, and there is a guideline that will show you where your bubble will go. You can tap the bubble to swap between the two bubbles in the launcher, and bubbles are limited. This game’s twist are the ghosts, but their mechanics are uninteresting. Pop the bubbles around them and then pop the ghosts. That’s it.
PAC-MAN Pop doesn’t move the needle within the bubble-popping genre. It’s exactly what you expect but with good animations, great music and an excellent art style. If you’re looking for a themed bubble shooter, pick this up. You’ll have a ton of fun with it. If you’re looking for a game that pushes the envelope a bit then you’ll want to look elsewhere.
