Very solid retro graphics, offers multiple control styles, frantic gameplay
Expensive upgrades, stale gameplay
Redungeon for Android is going to be a massive hit with a certain crowd. It’s an awesome looking arcade runner where you play a blue knight (at least temporarily) who is trying to make his way through randomly generated dungeons. Unfortunately, I’m not part of the crowd this will impress.
I do want to say that I’m totally in love with this game on paper. You will either swap or tap your way through extremely hazardous dungeons as you try and flee from these shadowy figures with red eyes. The art design is seriously top notch and the music definitely ain’t too shabby either. When it comes down to it, I feel like this game literally got everything right that it could.
Now as cool as you look with your sword and shield, you won’t ever get into a fight with anything more than the clay pots you’ll smash to scrounge up money. Instead, you’ll be avoiding different obstacles as quickly as possible so you don’t die. If you do happen to die, and you will, you’ll collect those coins you picked up and will use them to buy new upgrades and the like. There are also characters you can unlock and play as, each with their own unique skills.
Redungeon just isn’t my cup of tea because I’m generally really terrible at these arcade runners. I don’t have the patience for them, and while the level design is great in this game, I always have a way to find games like this one just a bit too shallow for my taste.
