At some point, match-three games are going to need to learn how to adapt their gameplay mechanics to a changing audience or continue to lose ground in popularity to newer crops of games that are coming out. Monster Busters: Link Flash for Android is another match-three game that wants to piggyback on the popularity of a genre well past its popularity peak.
Developers have pretty much created the perfect template for developing cookie cutter match-three games and that’s exactly what this is. In the game’s defense, the aesthetic is a little cooler than some other match-three games because we’re dealing with monsters instead of cupcakes, but it still feels like it’s the same game that I’ve been playing for years. Maybe it’s because it is.
The gameplay mechanics in play here require you to actually drag a line through all of the monsters you’re trying to match. You’ll need to do things like rack up a certain score within a limited amount of turns, or you need to try and match a certain amount of monsters within a limited amount of turns. Basically, it’s all the same stuff we’ve seen before.
I wish that more games would try and do something new or interesting rather than making the same game over and over again but with a different aesthetic. As a player, if you’ve played more than a handful of match-three games then you’ve probably hit your limit. There are better ways to make a match-three game rather than building the entire game around the single mechanic, but Monster Busters: Link Flash is only that.
