Review Hungry Shark World

Brandon Girod
Gorgeous graphics, detailed environment, fun exploration and progression
Lacks objective, controls could use tuning
Somehow, the world has gone this long without a decent shark game. Hungry Shark World for Android aims to solve that problem by letting you pose as a very hungry shark who needs to continuously feed on things in order to stay alive.
My first few seconds swimming through the game’s gorgeous waters were spent pondering a bunch of questions. Why do the controls feel so fidgety? Where are all of the fish? And is the ocean floor really this good looking everywhere?
Starting with the controls, you’ll use the right side of your screen as a joystick that will guide your shark to fish. Tapping on the left side of the screen will engage a boost that is limited by a boost meter, which refills fairly fast over time. I’ll admit, the swimming did take a little getting used to, but once I was caught up, I felt like the controls were actually really responsive, though they could still use a bit of tweaking.
The main bit of the game is eating fish, other things that live underwater and even unsuspecting humans or birds. The first time I snagged someone’s leg and lept out of the water to snag a passing seagull were especially memorable.
As I explored further into the ocean’s depths, I quickly realized there was more to the game than I thought. Eventually you’ll reach areas where you’re not the only predator and you’ll also need to upgrade your shark so you can stand a chance in the more dangerous parts of the ocean. Unfortunately, aside from boredom, there isn’t really anything out there to really push you to explore more of the ocean. That’s one area I think the game could use some improvement.
Hungry Shark World may have some considerably questionable moral dilemmas, but it’s a heck of a lot of fun. While there’s a lot to do in the game, I can’t help but wonder how much better the game could be with a little structure or even some additional objectives. Who would have thought playing one of the ocean’s most fearsome predators could be so engaging?
