Review LOUD on Planet X

Brandon Girod
Great music, innovative gameplay, solid controls
The timing seemed weird
I first saw Loud on Planet X for Android in a quick look from one of my favorite video game media sites and they were playing it on Steam. I didn’t really think much of it because it’s definitely not the type of game I would really be into trying to play on my PC, but finding out that the game is on mobile totally sold me. This is one of the most unique tower defense/rhythm games I’ll probably ever play.
Now, the biggest selling point for this game is the fact that all of the music used in this game was licensed from real, contemporary bands that happen to pretty much all be awesome. In the game, all of these awesome bands have been abducted by aliens in the middle of shows, so you need to tap out laser beams to the rhythm of the beat in order to protect the band and defeat the aliens.
I’m a huge fan of this game because the idea of tapping on different lanes to a beat in order to fend of aliens is easily one of the most unique gameplay mechanics that I’ve seen on mobile, and definitely the most unique that I’ve seen recently. My biggest complaint is that there are no upgrade paths. You’ll play each level in an effort to get the highest score you can, and there are multiple difficulties that you can play on, but once you’re done, you’re done. The replayability of the game is really low.
Loud on Planet X is easily worth the $4 price tag it’s asking for, just for the licensed music used in it alone. But the gameplay is actually really, really good and given that these are the types of games we want to see more of, so giving the developers your support is important.
