Review Mars Mountain

7.9Good
Great pixel graphics, solid controls
Way too many obstacles, no cool rewards
Mars Mountain for Android is an endless arcade game that I’ve played elsewhere under the guise of another name and a different look. This game isn’t really unique except in the fact that it is seemingly one of the most difficult games of its kind that I’ve had the pleasure (or displeasure) of dying repeatedly to.
From what I can gather, you are an astronaut that has crash landed his ship on an extremely dangerous planet full of blocks. From the game’s perspective, it looks like you’re climbing down something, but who knows where you’re trying to go. You’re only concern is that you want to get there in one piece.
I’ve always liked the concept of games like this. Ones where you have a generous amount of time to play where it is that you need to move next. Except this game is a bit deceiving in that it doesn’t really give you that luxury. At any given second, there is usually some sort of obstacle that is actively trying to kill you. Whether it’s a fireball, spike trap, a tile that turns into a bomb, a teleport that ports you nowhere you want to be or just the slow impending doom the slow scrolling screen represents behind you. Rest assured, you’ll die and you’ll die a lot.
But therein lies the problem with this game. There are simply too many obstacles to manage. I couldn’t keep track of the amount of times where I ended up taking a path, guided by obstacles to a complete dead end because I had nowhere else to go. The game felt really cheap because it’s difficult to time when you need to jump on a spiked tile while it's temporarily safe while also having to make sure you don’t get hit by a fireball as soon as you land.
Maybe Mars Mountain is for a crowd that is much more hardcore about these kind of games than I am, but I think for the casual player, this game just isn’t fun. It’s frustrating.
