Insanely addictive gameplay, lovely retro graphics, no ads
Controls are difficult to manage on mobile
Downwell for Android is an odd game because I knew so much about it before it ever even hit Android. It’s a game that hit iOS first and was also released on Steam, and it’s one that you really, really need a control to really get down and dirty with it. But even with touch controls, the game is serviceable and fun.
So in this game your character gleefully jumps down a well. For the longest time, you’ll probably think this is some endless arcade game, but there is an end and there is a reason the guy has jumped down that well. But in order to get there and find out you’ll need to master all of the game’s mechanics, and there are plenty to learn.
So as you’re falling, you’ll notice there are enemies, platforms, and maybe the most noticeable thing - you’ve got gun feet. To survive, you’ll need to make your way down each level of the well by either avoidance, stompage, or just straight up shooting everything to death. One protip is that you really don’t ever want to hit the ground, and this is the thing that is really hard to do on a mobile device because you don’t have the same sort of control over your character as you would with a controller or even a tactile keyboard.
The game has rogue-like qualities in that you can find caves in each level that will have money or give you power-ups, and at the end of each level, you’ll find new power-ups that help you greatly - if you’re lucky. Power-ups only last until you die.
Downwell is a really, really fun arcade game. It starts well on the mobile platform, but like many games, the controls really hinder your ability to play the game effectively. Regardless, there is still a lot of fun to be had here.
