Review Primal Fire

Brandon Girod
Really cool aesthetic, controls are responsive
Virtual controls are too small, the gameplay itself is lacking
If you want a lesson in patience, check out Primal Fire for Android. It’s a game that has you playing the role of a caveman that’s apparently become lost in his cave. You’ll have to control your caveman as you guide his way through the maze to the exit.
The problem is that you’re not really just trying to find the end of the tunnel. You actually need to make sure that you’re constantly stocked up on both food and firewood. On the bottom right of the screen are indicators to help you keep track of when you need to eat or rekindle your torch. There is also a small visual representation that lets you know around how many of the resources you still have.
Navigating through the maze is sort of hard enough because there isn’t really much to do. You have no map to refer to, so you really have absolutely no idea where you’re going and the maze seemingly goes on for just about forever. I think I played about 15 to 20 minutes before I finally gave up because I couldn’t find out where I was supposed to go. The fact that you truly have no idea where you’re going might seem fun as a concept, but it’s kind of not fun at all.
The food and torch management also just seemed to be tacked on to give the player something else to do while they wander around aimlessly. You’ll find extra food and wood around randomly, so it’s not like you can actively search for them either. You’re basically just guessing, just like you’re guessing where the exit it.
Primal Fire looks really cool, and even has an interesting concept that it’s built on. The problem is that the developers didn’t do enough to gamify that concept. Rather than being exciting, gameplay is boring and I never felt like I was ever progressing, I just felt like I was getting more lost.
