Review InCell VR (Cardboard)

Brandon Girod
Beautiful graphics, in-depth mechanics, atmospheric
Can be disorienting, cluttered ui
Here’s a question I don’t think I’ve ever actually asked myself: Would a game be more fun if you simply changed perspective? Well, I think the simple answer is yes. InCell VR for Android is a pretty simple runner, but as a player, you’re completely immersed in the world as you’re running which offers an entirely new experience.
I’ll preface this review by saying two things upfront, this is the first real VR game I’ve played and I played this on a Gear VR. With that said, there is a lot going for this game even outside of the fact that I really felt like I was apart of the world. For instance, there are upgrades you can make to your character throughout the game. And there is an entire story line that is based in science and is pretty interesting from that alone.
I will say, I was a bit overwhelmed by the game and I didn’t feel like the interface was streamlined when compared to a traditional game. This is because you select things by looking at them and a lot of the options are ingrained in the world. It’s a really cool effect, but it takes time getting used to navigating your way around where you want to go.
Gameplay is controlled by tilting your head. You’ll run down a pipe where you try and collect proteins while avoiding other obstacles. At first, I thought I was going to be pretty disoriented because you’re literally running around in a circle, so the world is spinning around you, but the controls were really responsive.
I had a lot of fun with InCell VR. I think it was partly because it was my first VR game, but also because I was just impressed with how much content was actually in the game. It didn’t rely on the simple gimmick that it’s a VR game, it really tried to incorporate you as a character within the world.
