Excellent graphics, fun level design, it features rayman
Controls take a bit to get used to
Rayman, back in its heyday, was one of the best platforming games you could play on consoles. And while there is still a really good one that comes out every now and then, the genre as a whole just doesn’t seem to be as popular as it once was. Well, it looks like Rayman is getting a breath of fresh air on mobile with Rayman Adventure for Android.
This is a sort of arcade runner where you control Rayman as he goes on a crazy adventure to rescue the Incrediballs. Rayman games have always been known for their great level design, and the developers haven’t skimped out here either, at least not by mobile standards. While most of the levels look the same in aesthetic, they feel different and handcrafted. I never felt like I was just playing through a bunch of levels that were randomly thrown together without a thought in the world.
The game is also a bit more complex than your typical runner. For instance, you can actually run backwards, and will need to do so frequently because the Incrediballs are hidden all throughout each level. There are tons of various gestures to learn as well. You can attack, do a ground pound, jump, and do jumping attacks. What might be craziest of all is that the gesture controls actually work. Sure, they do take a bit of time to learn, but once you have them, you have them.
I had a lot of fun just playing Rayman Adventure. The game’s presentation is truly top notch, and it reminded me of what dedicated developers could do when they weren’t worried about trying to get the player to view as many ads as possible.
