Review Apocalypse Meow

Brandon Girod
Great graphics, solid controls, lots of upgrade paths
Timers, grindy
I’m a huge fan of bullet hell shoot’em ups, and I was really excited to see a game like Apocalypse Meow for Android show up on the Google Play Store. It’s a shoot’em up with great graphics, solid controls, tons of great effects, and even has a bit of voice acting thrown into the mix.
The presentation the game exudes is absolutely great. The voice acting is a bit hit or miss. The commander, who you hear most often, isn’t the greatest voice actor I’ve ever heard, and that’s because it’s probably the developer. Other characters don’t sound too bad at all, however.
Each level is set up with a list of objectives that you can hit in order to get a higher score, and you’ll need to complete two objectives in order to move on to the next level. The objectives are where the game began to lose me. The objectives are set up in a way that you have to spend a considerable amount of effort on each one, and locking users out of progression because they need to destroy 45 asteroids isn’t fun. Having to replay the same levels over and over just isn’t fun.
Upgrades exist, but the good ones are incredibly expensive. I was getting around 50 coins per run, which would usually last between 3 and 5 minutes. You can upgrade all of your typical items like shields, guns, and the like. But you can also add side guns, hire wingmen and more. The problem is that everything is also tied to an upgrade timer as well.
There is a lot to the game that could be made better by simply rebalancing the upgrade path. As it stands, it simply takes too much time to grind out upgrades, you have to play through too much of the same content, and the upgrade timers should be completely thrown out.
